Urban Metabolism

The purpose of the project is to enable formulation of strategies and plans for sustainable urban development, specifically related to sustainable resource use. Our goal is to develop a novel method that looks at urban systems from a holistic perspective. The method quantifies resource consumption and connected environmental impacts at city level. It will be applied to metropolitan areas in Sweden to identify pathways towards sustainability. Four goals are identified: complement the Urban Metabolism Analyst method, developed by Rosado, with a life cycle impact module for products and materials investigate the relationship between economy, policies, lifestyles and flows of resources forecast future material consumption and connected life cycle impacts identify measures to enable convergence of the programmed development with the optimum development trajectory. The projects is carried out at the Division of Water Environment Technology.
