COP 25, Climate Change Symposium #MI2020, Milan, Italy

Our Metabolism of Cities member Dr. Gabriela Fernandez and her colleague Carol Maione presented at the Climate Change Symposium, Pre COP25 #MI2020, Educazione agli SDGs, on January 15, 2020 in Milan, Italy. The title of the presentation was called “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals: Education campaigns on Sustainable Development, Resource Consumption, and Plastic Pollution." An overview of the Urban Metabolism and Minority Pulse: campagna rivolta all’educazione e sensibilizzazione di gruppi minoritari was presented.

Delivering education to all requires the employment of multiple, diversified communication and learning methodologies. This is especially true when our targets are minority and underrepresented groups, which may or may not have impaired understanding abilities. In this perspective, the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) come useful as a common learning platform to deliver knowledge about hot topics such as climate change or resource consumption. This presentation offers a toolkit, replicable methodology, and learning objectives to educate minority groups using the SDGs. For this study, we selected 7 target groups: children, elderly, LGBTI+, women, students and academics, persons with disabilities, homeless and refugees.

Carol is a Research Fellow at the Dept. Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering, Politecnico di Milano (Milan, Italy), where she focuses on industrial transitions towards the circular economy of plastics materials. Her research interests include: plastic pollution, recycling technology, local-based solutions in African countries, industrial ecology, MFA and LCA, urban metabolism, microplastics, sustainable development, minority education, and environmental justice.
